Amazing Zeus Portrait - Ionia Miletus Types of Alexander III Tetradrachm 3rd-2nd cent. BC

$2,750.00

This very well struck example of a popular tetradrachm from Miletus. The obverse features Alexander the Great. The artistry and strike is well done. The reverse, featuring Zeus, is one of the nicest portraits I've ever seen. The awesome facial features, balanced physique, and well feathered eagle, makes this particularly tetradrachm very special when compared to others of the same grade. Similar examples of amazing reverse portraits have sold for $10k+ and are in high demand.

Amazing Boeotia, Thebes Greek Ancient Stater c. 380 BC. Super Strike and artistry!

$2,400.00

The Thebes "Shield" stater; although certainly not one of the most common staters, is a staple among collectors and these pieces have been in high demand now for many years. There is usually just a small handful on the market at any given time and even less in this grade. This piece is special due to its high grade, clean surfaces and amazing strike. The diameter of this stater is closer to that of an average Tetradrachm of the same period, while many others tend to be smaller. This piece is fairly unique and NGC certified as shown in the photos. You always receive the exact coin shown upon purchase. As with all our inventory, if you can place it in your cart and purchase it, it is immediately available. Thank you.

Nicolas II of Russia - Imperial Coinage

If you don't know the story of Nicolas II, the "Last Czar" of Russia, it is certainly worth a read.  Most notably, after Nicolas II and his family were exiled to Serbia, the Russian government imprisoned the entire family in a home and eventually sentenced the family to death. It was immediately carried out and the soldiers murdered them all, even the children.  But the events leading up to this bloody massacre makes the man even more interesting.  Russian Numismatics are exploding in popularity in recent years as more collectors explore Russian history and realize just how fascinating it is.  These (the coin pictured) are the very coins struck under the authority of Nicolas II during his rein.  This particular coin is well struck, has great details and lots of luster.

Rare coins vs. Conventional Hard Assets

rare world coins

The charts below demonstrate the performance of an average rare coin portfolio.  The one to the left compares rare coins to gold and farmland performance.  The chart to the right demonstrates the rate of return of the average coin portfolio compared to Treasury Bills, the Dow Index, CPI, and farmland.  These two charts show the historical performance of rare coins; and although this is NOT a guarantee of future performance - it's nice to see that rare coins have done quite well.

us trade dollar
us trade dollar
The silver US Trade Dollar (pictured above) was produced by the US Mint between 1873-1878.  The main purpose for the trade dollar was to better facilitate trade with China.  During this time period, the nearly globally accepted "one dollar" silver coin was the Mexican 8 Reals or Peso.  These coins were 420 grains which is slightly heavier than any standard silver dollar at the time.  This is why these coins were preferred in trade with China.  Since trade with China was growing, merchants needed a way to trade without having to pay a premium to buy Mexican 8 Reals.  Congress authorized the Trade Dollar to compete with the 8 Reals, and the Mint started making them in short order.  We all agree here at Holdables that the Trade Dollar is the best looking dollar of the time and one of the most overlooked and undervalued as well.  As far as holding these coins, even though there is not much of a difference than a normal silver dollar, the slightly larger circumstance and weight makes this coin a joy to handle either loose or in a holder.  We love US Trade Dollars here at Holdables and consider them a great buy at the current prevailing prices and a likely value play through the end of the decade.

What are Bullion coins?

Bullion vs. Rare Coins

According to the US Mint...

"A bullion coin is an investment-grade coin that is valued by its weight and fineness of a specific precious metal. Unlike commemorative or numismatic coins valued by limited mintage, rarity, condition, and age."

To keep it simple I like to look at it this way; bullion coins are the same as bars of gold or silver.  Their purpose is to give gold/silver additional appeal in the form of a coin; and a variety of weights to accommodate a diverse group of investors.  This is what drives the purchase of these hard assets and is a huge foundation for gold and silver investing.  In addition to appeal, the mint and dealers are able to charge more than the value of the gold/silver to cover many costs involved in making these coins.  Outside of profits, these coins are essential for their portability and easy liquidity. In many cases, you might pay anywhere from 5% to 15% premium above the price of the metal value.   There has been times in recent years that demand was so strong for physical gold and silver, prices for these coins rose well above their melt values.

Rare coins arrive at their value in many ways while bullion is very straight forward (1oz =  $1,800 for example).  There are three main factors that drive our strategy:  1.  rarity: how many coins were minted or how many may still exist.  2. eye appeal:  this includes the overall condition of the coin as well as the fineness of the artistry, strike and surfaces, and mint luster if present.  3.  historical value: the better the story, the better the coin value.   With both bullion and rare coins, there is market risk, just like conventional investments.  Just like stocks and bonds, bullion and rare coin markets can slow down and become stagnant or lose value due to lower demand or the price of metals.  We've seen a steady but growing market in the past 10 years and we expect that trajectory to continue.   The year 2020 has marked the beginning of a very strong market for rare coins.  According to the FTC you should, "Expect to hold your investment for at least 10 years before possibly realizing a profit." , they were referring to rare or collectible coins.   One thing to remember as well, bullion prices change daily with the price of gold and silver determined by global markets.  Rare coins so far in the 2020's have demonstrated a robust, competitive and vibrant market across the spectrum of coin types.  We believe this will continue for several years.  The integration of technology and coin grading/slabbing has a high opportunity value; we believe this will also drive more consumers and investors to the market.  Expected and real inflation will also drive up prices and we are seeing that occur today.

Rare U.S. coins May provide stability in A portfolio

When investing in anything, wether it be coins or real estate, your portfolio will consist of whatever you decide to fill it with.  These decisions become important if you are seeking stability or diversity within your coin portfolio.  Rare and high graded common U.S. coins have proven to be more stable than any other coin type.  Demand for these coins remain healthy and have been on this trajectory for the last few decades.  Below is a very special coin that is not often seen, the $3 gold "Indian Princes"  from 1889.  I would recommend finding this coin in our store to read about its history, it's not often seen or even heard of.
